Should I do this?

Knowing your risk factors is useful for everyone. However, there are certain groups of people who are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer's:

  1. Have a Family History of Dementia
  2. Are Nearing or Have Started Menopause
  3. Play (or have played) Contact Sports
  4. Have Present Concerns About Your Cognition
  5. Have Metabolic Syndrome (e.g., Diabetes)
  6. Are Taking a Statin

By knowing your genetic status and other risk factors, you can make informed decisions that help you reduce risk of Alzheimer's.

Head Trauma

Repeated concussions are a risk factor for Alzheimer's Disease, especially for those with one or two copies of ApoE 4.

Before participating in a contact sport, you should know your ApoE status.

Taking a Statin

Knowing your ApoE status is important when taking statins because ApoE4 can affect how your body responds to these drugs. ApoE4 carriers might experience an inadequate response to statin therapy.

Memory Complaints

Early memory issues can be a sign of future cognitive decline. Understanding your genetic risk can lead to early intervention.

Metabolic Syndrome

Conditions like diabetes and hypertension can increase Alzheimer's risk. Knowing your ApoE status can guide lifestyle and medical interventions.

There is an epidemic of metabolic syndrome worldwide, due to weight gain, unhealthy diet, and lack of exercise. Patients with metabolic syndrome have triple the risk of AD, the same as carrying ApoE4. If the risk is additive, having one copy of APoE4 and metabolic syndrome would increase your AD risk 6 fold. Knowing your ApoE status might motivate you to approach metabolic disease more aggressively, including intense lifestyle change, and early use of new GLP-1 receptor agonists. These drugs may also have an independent neuroprotective effect.
